Burnt Mills Elementary

Burnt Mills Elementary is a Pre-K through 5th grade school located in Montgomery County in Silver Spring, Maryland.  Our mascot is the Bald Eagle, a creature that soars for the heights. We belong to the Northeast Consortium of schools.  Montgomery County is north-northwest of Washington, D.C.  It is one of the largest school districts in the United States. Our school is ten miles from the White House and from the Smithsonian Institution.

Our school has four hundred eighty-three students representing many different countries. For eleven percent of our students, English is their second language and we are proud that they represent their cultures and countries at Burnt Mills.

Burnt Mills is one of a few elementary schools in Montgomery County that offers a partial Spanish Immersion program. The program is open to all students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Via this program, our educators expose young students to Latino/Hispanic cultures as well as to other cultures. The main objective of the program is to help them get an early start in second language acquisition. With ensuing globalization, the idiom, “whoever speaks two languages is worth two people,” has come to be true today. Our children are our future and at Burnt Mills we want that future to be bright.

Our classroom instruction is enhanced by reading and math support specialists, resource teachers, and academic support teachers. We have special programs for the gifted and talented as well as after-school programs. Education is a team effort and educators at Burnt Mills take education seriously. At Burnt Mills children come first because they are the beneficiaries of our collective efforts. We are committed to help our children soar like the Bald Eagle.
